Dinking Around...

Sand Hollow - We caught some sun, fish and Ryan caught himself. We lost the sunscreen. Didn't find out where we had misplaced it until we got back to the hotel.

State Record Crappie *

I have seen a lot about the new State Record Crappie, caught at Lake Powell earlier this year by a guy from Wisconsin. 3 Years ago while fishing at Lake Powell I caught a Crappie that went exactly 19 inches. It was the 3rd Crappie I had caught that morning and also the 3rd Crappie I had ever caught in my life. The first two seemed like normal sized pan fish but when I reeled in the 3rd monster, I decided to carry the fish over to the house boat for a picture and measurement. While I don't know if my Crappie weighed more than 3lbs 5oz which is what the new state record weighed, it did measure at 19 inches which is half an inch longer than the state record. Below are pictures of both fish. His might have had more girth and the still be the larger of the two fish but I thought I would post both pics up on here for a side-by-side comparison. I'll admit that his fish looks bigger, but he is clearly doing the old "stick the fish right in the lens of the camera to make it look bigger" trick. No need Mr. Wisconsin. Your fish is already huge. Regardless, congrats to this guy for nailing that monster. As to which fish is bigger?? You decide.

Sand Hollow (Weekend Quickie)

Spent the weekend at Sand Hollow. The trailer had problems on the way down, so we had to ditch the boat in Nephi at a repair shop and fish from our tubes for the weekend. Got into some pigs while we were there regardless. Check out the video at the bottom of this post.

Fishing 2008

Life has been busy and because of that the fishing trips haven't been as often as we would like. Here are some pictures from the 2008 season.

Fall Fishing

The warm water has gone and it's that time of year when you put the bass gear away and break out the fly rod. I do hope to do some bass fishing this winter but I'm getting as much fly fishing in as I can before the ice hits.

A few months ago to kick off the cooler weather, Ryan, Rory and I all went down to Boulder Utah to do some fishing at the boulder mountains. The weather didn't cooperate and the wind was a little much up in the higher elvations but we did get in some fishing at Lilly Lake and Lower Bowns produced some nice rainbows.

We stayed at a cool little lodge down there and rented a room that had 2 bunk beds. The lodge also had a community bathroom with a shower which was nice because we could take a shower after a long day of fishing and a long night by the fire.

Some of the local fishing has been great as well. Ryan and I went to Strawberry a few weeks ago and did alright. It was really cold but the fish were biting.

I also was able to get away by myself the other night after work for some fishing at Huntington Res. The fishing was on fire and the all of the fish were a decent size.

Summer Fishing

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket
So far the fishing this summer has been almost perfect. I have been able to catch 2 species of fish that I've never caught before and the fishing has been fast! I don't think any of us can complain because we've all been catching plenty of big fish.

A lot of the local ponds have been paying off pretty well. Here are some bass caught this summer at some of the community ponds in the area.

We've also caught some frogs in the process! These guys are almost as agressive as the fish!

A couple weeks ago Dan and I went out with some guys from the Freeform crew to try out luck at Willard for the Wipers. We both caught 1 small Wiper each and nothing worth taking a picture of but the scenery was killer.

A couple months back I went to Pineview for my first time. Ryan was able to get into all the Smallmouth he could handle but I couldn't catch anything other than a couple of dinks. I did manage to land a couple smaller Muskies though.
